Throughout the round robin stage, Mexico’s Cañeros de Los Mochis were cruising. They sailed past every team in the competition, looking for all the world like the best team in Latin America. And then it all got, well… sloppy.

They lost a stinker to Puerto Rico’s Indios de Mayaguez in the last round robin game and let that rot slip through to their semi final match with the Dominican Republic’s Tigres del Licey, who were exactly the opposite type of team. Energized, rejuvenated, hungry, the Tigres attacked the Cañeros from the first pitch, with every single batter getting at least one hit in the game.

Mexico’s pitchers were hit off the mound, chewing through their bullpen, but with the bat in their hands, the Cañeros weren’t able to return the favor. Nothing seemed to go their way and they stranded 8 base runners, wasting opportunity after opportunity.

The strong play at the back end of the series continued into the other semi final as hosts Venezuela pulled off back-to-back wins over defending champions Colombia.

The Leones del Caracas and Vaqueros de Monteria clashed two days in a row and the home crowd made their presence known, with raucous celebration egging their side on. And the crowd were not disappointed, as Venezuela’s Leones roared to early leads that the Colombians simply could not come back from.

Overall, the Dominican Republic is the country with the most championships, having taken top honors 21 times, while Venezuela has seen seven overall champions from their shores.
