As much as 2022 saw a vacuum left by the MLB strike, where there was a decided lack of baseball around in the early part of the year, 2023 promises to be the opposite.

We are in the thick end of the Caribbean Series, and only a week away from the start of the college baseball season, as well the deadline for pitchers and catchers to report to spring training. All of which is likely to be overshadowed by the return of the World Baseball Classic after a six-year hiatus.

But to think of the Caribbean Series as simply a tune-up for the WBC is to miss out on some fantastic baseball.

Colombia is trying to defend their title in the competition but Mexico are setting the pace for everyone in Caracas, Venezuela. Each nation is represented by the champion of their own domestic league, and the participants this year are as follows:

  • Colombia: Vaqueros de Monteria
  • Cuba: Agricultores
  • Curaçao: WildCats KJ74
  • Dominican Republic: Tigres del Licey
  • Mexico: Cañeros de Los Mochis
  • Panama: Federales de Chiriqui
  • Puerto Rico: Indios de Mayaguez
  • Venezuela: Leones del Caracas

Mexico continued their domination of this event with a solid performance against Panama, perhaps putting an end to the Federales de Chiriqui’s campaign.

Defending champions Colombia made an emphatic statement, pinning 11 runs on the Dominican Republic.

Puerto Rico stay in the race by handing Cuba their fifth loss of the tournament, an absolutely turgid outing by the Cubans. And hosts Venezuela are still in the running, putting up a phenomenal eighth inning rally to erase a four run deficit and take the win from a Curaçao team that is now in a must-win situation.

Everything comes down to the results on Wednesday as to which four teams will make it through to the semis.
