Opening Day has come and the 2023 MLB season is underway. We look at the teams playing today, Friday March 31st and how you can follow all the action.
The long awaited, or perhaps dreaded depending on your view on the new rules, Opening Day has been and gone and for the most part, it went without much drama.
The Yankees stomped the Giants in a game that lasted 2 hours and 33 minutes, and while that was not the shortest game of the day, it certainly caught the most attention around the league. The pitch clock, accounting for one solitary violation, was largely inconsequential to the outcome of the match, much to the glee of those who have preached its virtues.
And while there were shorter games; the shortest was the Guardians vs Mariners and the Tigers vs Rays which both clocked in at 2 hours 14 minutes; there were also longer games, with five of yesterday’s games lasting over three hours and the longest coming in at 3 hours 38 minutes as the Blue Jays and Cardinals slugged it out.

Top Matchups of the Day
While it is far too early in the season to talk about good matchups, there are a few that promise to be quite tasty indeed. In particular, the Dodgers taking on the Diamondbacks. Both of these teams are used to hitting in a hitters’ park, and if there is any stadium in the country that favours the batter it is Dodger Stadium. There could be a flurry of runs in this one.
Other games to keep an eye on are Houston and Chicago and the Mets as they take on Miami. While the White Sox have struggled in recent years, they have a solid lineup, on paper at least, and it will be interesting to keep your eye on the Astros, because love them or hate them, there can be no argument that they are the best team in baseball right now. Their organization is a championship-gobbling franchise and no matter what you personally think of them, the Astros are the team to beat.
The Mets have a similar point to prove with their high-dollar roster, particularly on the mound, and with Justin Verlander coming up injured on Opening Day, it will be interesting to see how all of that investment plays out for them.
