Aaron Judge and Juan Soto close in on all-time Yankees record
The show-stopping outfielders hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning against the Cleveland Guardians.
Aaron Judge and Juan Soto continue to show that they are one of the destructive duos in Major League Baseball. The Yankees outfielders hit back-to-back home runs during the first inning against the Cleveland Guardians.
First, Soto connected with an attempted changeup freom Matthew Boyd and sent it flying at 97.5mph to center field. Judge then followed that up by crushing a sinker from the Guardians starter, once again sending it soaring into the stands. These home runs represented Soto’s 35th and Judge’s 45th homer of the year.
With Tuesday’s performance Judge and Soto became just the fourth Yankee duo to hit exactly five consecutive home runs in a season. The other duos were Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in 1927; Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio in 1936; and Gary Sheffield and Alex Rodriguez in 2005.
According to MLB only one duo has hit more home runs in consecutive at-bats in Yankees history: Mark Teixeira and Johnny Damon combined for six in the 2009 season, the last time the Yankees won the World Series.
Soto’s homer was all the more significant because, with 37 regular season games remaining, the Dominican has already equalled his previous best for home runs in a season. While playing for the San Diego Padres last season ‘La Fiera’ reached 35 home runs after playing in all 162 possible games.
