Alejandro Kirk and Mexico’s other representatives at the World Series
The Blue Jays’ catcher has been a sensation in this Fall Classic. Let’s take a look at the other Mexican players who have written their own World Series stories.

The story of Mexican ballplayers on baseball’s biggest stage—the World Series—is one of pride, perseverance, and national legacy.
Since Beto Ávila became the first Mexican to appear in the Fall Classic back in 1954, a total of 20 Mexican players have made it to Major League Baseball’s grandest spotlight. Their journey has been marked by grit, talent, and unforgettable moments that have etched their names into the annals of sports history.
Beto Ávila: the trailblazer
It all began on September 29, 1954, when Ávila recorded his first World Series hit in Game 1 against the New York Giants. Nearly two decades later, Horacio Piña became the first Mexican pitcher to record an out in the World Series (1973), symbolizing the rise of Mexican arms in the Majors.
Champions of the Fall Classic
Since then, 11 Mexican players have hoisted the Commissioner’s Trophy. Among them, reliever Sergio Romo stands out as the only Mexican with three World Series rings, earning him a special place in baseball lore.
On the offensive side, sluggers like Aurelio Rodríguez, Erubiel Durazo, Benjamín Gil, Karim García, and Jorge Orta have all delivered hits in the World Series, proving that Mexican bats can shine just as brightly.

Dynamic duos and historic pairings
In 2020, Julio Urías and Víctor González made history with the Los Angeles Dodgers as the third Mexican duo to appear in the World Series on the same team. They joined the ranks of Jaime García and Fernando Salas (St. Louis Cardinals, 2011), and Roberto Osuna and José Urquidy (Houston Astros, 2019)—each pair representing a new chapter in Mexico’s growing influence on the mound.
Even players with shorter stints—like Enrique Romo, Joel Zumaya, Alfredo Aceves, and Jorge Cantú—have contributed to this rich legacy. Their appearances, however brief, are part of a broader narrative of Mexican excellence in the Majors.

Alejandro Kirk: making history behind the plate
And then there’s Alejandro Kirk. The Toronto Blue Jays catcher is rewriting the record books: the first Mexican-born catcher to play in a World Series, the first to hit a home run in the Fall Classic, and the first to hit two. Now, he’s in the running for World Series MVP—cementing his place in history and inspiring a new generation of Mexican talent.
From the first hit in 1954 to MVP-caliber performances today, Mexican players continue to leave their mark on the World Series—and their story is far from over.
