Colombia know how to play
If were honest, Colombia is a very interesting team. With a mixture of major and minor leaguers, this is a team that has no reason to be overawed by the likes of heavyweights like the U.S.A. who are also in their group. Indeed, after a hard fought 5-4 win over Mexico, the Colombians will be fully confident that they can dispatch the British. Rays outfielder Harold Ramírez is coming off a strong season, as is Angels third baseman Gio Urshela. There are also Cardinals outfielder Óscar Mercado and Twins second baseman Donovan Solano who bring a certain stability to the team. We’ve also got to mention first baseman Jordan Díaz, an impressive prospect who debuted with Athletics last year. Though their pitching could do with some improving, this is an all-round solid team.
The Brits can play but have to improve
Team GB is not a bad outfit at all, but they’ve had the misfortune of being placed in a tough group that includes defending champion U.S.A. to whom they lost their first game 6-2. On the other hand, while they did concede to the Americans, it’s got to be said that the game did not go as many would have expected. Indeed, the British showed they can play with the best of them, which is worthy of note given the gulf in accolades between the two nations. After all, this is a team that only qualified for their very first WBC after beating Spain. With a roster that is largely made up of players from the Bahamas or Americans and Canadians with British ties, this is definitely a team without the history of its opponents. On the other hand, the British do have some fairly decent talent in their team such as Trayce Thompson, who is by far the best hitter on the team. There is also Nationals shortstop, Lucius Fox, who made his major-league debut last year. Last but not least, we’ve got Harry Ford who is the top prospect in the Mariners’ system. In truth, the catcher is listed as a top 100 prospect after a strong season for Low-A Modesto in 2022.
