Diamondbacks’ Zac Gallen accidentally hits and kills bird

Ahead of the Diamondbacks game against the A’s, pitcher Zac Gallen accidentally hit a bird on a pitch while warming up.

Unfortunately, it’s one of the dangers of playing baseball. With baseballs flying through the air all the time, one is bound to catch a bird off-guard. Thus was the fate of one poor bird on Wednesday, when Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen accidentally hit and killed a bird with a baseball when throwing a curveball during warmups before their 5-3 win over the Oakland A’s.

“I don’t really know what happened, honestly,” Gallen said. “I just know that the ball changed directions really. I saw what happened. It’s kind of a freak accident. It’s unfortunate.”

It’s not the first time this has happened, and sadly, probably not the last. In fact, it was another Diamondbacks pitcher who famously struck and killed a bird back in 2001 - Randy Johnson. It was during a spring training game against the San Francisco Giants.
