Dodgers swept as Diamondbacks head to NLCS

Dodgers undone as Diamondbacks complete sweep

Nobody wants to be the one to say "I told you so," but it is almost impossible to do when you are talking about the Los Angeles Dodgers. So many things have become routine for the boys in blue over recent years. They dominate the regular season and then play like a junior college team in October. It has happened again and again, and now tonight, yet again.

Throughout this NLDS, Los Angeles have had the demeanor of a team sleepwalking their way through the motions. They possess one of the most high-powered offenses in all of baseball, yet found it nigh on impossible to wrap their bats around the ball, scoring only four runs over the three games.

This has been a storm brewing for a few weeks now and while the local LA press has been very "glass half full" about it all throughout the end of the regular season, the rest of the baseball community could see that the reality was that the emperor had no clothes on. And while the headlines of a shock loss are sure to grace LA papers tomorrow, the truth is that it only shocking if you haven't been paying attention.

Granted, the Dodgers bullpen has been decimated by injury, and while it may not be what many want to hear, the loss of Julio Urías has been devastating. But even so, the lack of spark has been shocking.

But baseball games are not won or lost in a vacuum. There is another team involved, and on the other side of this equation sits the Arizona Diamondbacks, perhaps the most underrated team in all of baseball.

They came into this contest very much the underdog, and truthfully, they have been second best in every matchup. Every matchup but one that is. When the dust is settled, the Diamondbacks were on top of the scoreboard.

All four Diamondback runs tonight were scored in a single, record-setting inning, as Arizona became the first team in playoff history to hit four home runs in a single inning.

That is the thing about the playoffs, they are unforgiving. Through this series, it looked as if that was something that Arizona understood, and the Dodgers failed to grasp.

The D-backs will now face either the Phillies or Braves, with Philadelphia one win away from pulling off an upset of their own. This post season is as interesting as you can imagine and the Diamondbacks are keen to continue spreading chaos.

PITCHING

The Dodgers will go to their biggest trade deadline signing tonight in Lance Lynn, and ask his veteran arm to keep them in with a chance to stay alive. When your back is against the wall, as the Dodgers are right now, there are few arms better to lean on than Lynn’s. He is a work horse who struck out 191 batters in 183.2 innings pitched this season, but his 5.73 ERA hints at the problem he will have to deal with, and that is that Lance Lynn gave up more home runs than any other pitcher in the major leagues this year. If the Dodgers are to stay in the fight, he will have to find a way to curb that.

Arizona will hand the ball to a rookie right hander in Brandon Pfaadt. This will be his second post season appearance since he started Game 1 of the Wild Cards. On that occasion, he went just two innings, giving up three runs on seven hits to the Brewers. If the Dodgers can manage a performance like that, it could be just the tonic that they need to shake them from their torpor. But if not, they will find out what Milwaukee did, that the Diamondbacks have a formidable bullpen ready to pick up the slack.

Jeffrey May

WELCOME!!!

Welcome to the Diario AS USA live commentary of Game 3 of the 2023 NLDS matchup between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks as the series moves to Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are on the back foot and teetering after being stunned at home, losing Games 1 and 2 in dramatic fashion.

In what is now becoming an all-too-familiar scenario to Dodger fans, the Blue come out of the regular season as a squad of future Hall of Famers, and then roll into October looking like a cross between Marvelous Marv and Bob Uecker.

On paper, the Dodgers are the better team. But playoff baseball is not polite or respectful of your reputation or your background. It is where the metal meets the meat.

When questions are asked of you, October baseball doesn’t care what your record is, doesn’t care what your ERA is or how many home runs you have hit. October baseball is the nothing more than the six inches in front of your face.

The Diamondbacks came into the NLDS with a chip on their shoulder and have been determined and dangerous. The Dodgers have been more or less asleep.

Los Angeles scored the second-highest number of runs at 906. They have the second highest number of runs per game at 5.55. In the first two games of the NLDS, the scored just two runs total.

As the old saying goes, if you do what you always did, you will get what you always got. Unless the Dodgers wake up, they will fly home tonight, dazed and wondering how it all fell apart on them. Again.
