Edwin Diaz injured in Puerto Rico celebrations after win over Dominican Republic
The Puerto Rico pitcher’s knee buckled after the 5-2 win in the World Baseball Classic


Puerto Rico’s Edwin Diaz injured himself in the celebrations after his side’s 5-2 win over the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, a victory that sees Puerto Rico qualify for the quarterfinals.
The Mets pitcher, who recently signed a 5-year $100m deal, was celebrating the triumph when his knee went our from under him and went down in pain. He was then unable to put any weight on the knee and a wheel chair had to be brought out for him.

Diaz had just closed out the Dominican Republic innings to see Puerto Rico to victory when the injury happened.
The Mets had imposed conditions on Diaz taking part in the World Baseball Classic, including not being allowed to pitch on consecutive days.
In the aftermath of the injury both sides were seen looking concerned over the condition of the player. Alexis Diaz, Edwin’s brother, was in tears over the situation.

Injury updates on Diaz
Diaz was reportedly seen by an orthopaedic specialist at the ground, the Marlins’ loanDepot Park, after the injury occurred and will undergo imaging on Thursday to determine the full extent of the injury.

Yes, what happened to Edwin Diaz was unfortunate, but let’s not all turn this into an anti-WBC rhetoric. The WBC taking place so close to the MLB season is not ideal timing I’m sure, but it shouldn’t be abolished altogether or have no MLB players either.
