As we enter the new season, it’s the perfect time to visit the second basemen rankings. Our rankings will consider various factors, including a player’s defensive abilities, offensive production, and overall performance from the previous season. We’ll be looking at key statistics such as batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and home runs to determine the top performers in this position.

10. Nico Hoerner

Starting our list at number 10 is the rising star of the Chicago Cubs, Nico Hoerner. Hoerner had a remarkable season marked by 43 stolen bases and nine home runs, making him a formidable force in any lineup with his speed and consistency at the plate. Though he may lack in raw power, his ability to generate runs and contribute to offensive success is impressive, which earns him a well-deserved spot on this list.

9. Andrés Giménez

Next up at number nine is Andrés Giménez of the Cleveland Guardians. Renowned for his stellar defensive prowess, Giménez is a reliable presence in the infield, consistently making difficult plays look effortless. Despite a slight dip in batting average last season, his all-around offensive contributions and base-running abilities make him a valuable asset for any team.

8. Matt McLain

Claiming the eighth spot is Cincinnati Reds’ sophomore sensation, Matt McLain. With an impressive rookie campaign under his belt, Mlan’s knack for hitting for power and drawing walks sets him apart as a versatile offensive threat. While his strikeout rate remains a concern, his potential for growth and development bodes well for his future in the league.

7. Gleyber Torres

Moving on to number seven, we have the New York Yankees’ standout, Gleyber Torres. A reliable hitter with 25 homers and a .273 average last season, Torres’ consistency at the plate makes him a reliable contributor to the Yankees’ lineup. Expectations are high for a career-defining performance with the team’s offseason improvements and Torres entering a contract year.

6. Ketel Marte

In the sixth spot, we find Arizona Diamondbacks’ stalwart Ketel Marte. Known for his consistent hitting and impressive run production, Marte’s offensive contributions were pivotal in the Diamondbacks’ journey to the World Series last year. With a proven track record of success, Marte is poised to continue his stellar performance in the upcoming season.

5. Luis Arias

Miami Marlins’ batting champ, Luis Arias, is breaking into the top five. With a remarkable .354 batting average last season, Arias’s exceptional contact skills and disciplined approach set him apart as one of the game’s elite hitters. While replicating last season’s feat may be a tall order, his ability to put the ball in play consistently ensures he remains a force to be reckoned with.

4. Ozzie Albies

Securing the fourth spot is Atlanta Braves’ powerhouse, Ozzie Albies. With 33 home runs and 109 RBIs last season, Albies’ offensive prowess was instrumental in the Braves’ success. Despite defensive struggles, his offensive output and potential for redemption make him a key component of one of the league’s most potent offenses.

3. Jose Altuve

Houston Astros’ stalwart Jose Altuve earned the bronze medal in our rankings. Despite a shortened season due to injury, Altuve’s impressive performance, marked by 17 homers and 14 stolen bases, solidifies his status as one of the game’s premier second basemen. With age proving no obstacle, Altuve is poised to continue his dominance on both sides of the ball.

2. Marcus Semien

Claiming the runner-up position is Texas Rangers’ veteran Marcus Semien. With three consecutive seasons of elite offensive production, Semien’s consistency and durability make him a valuable asset to any lineup. Despite the inevitable effects of age, Semien’s track record suggests another stellar season is within reach.

1. Mookie Betts

Without hesitation and doubt, Mookie Betts, the Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman, had to be crowned the top player in his position for the 2024 season. Betts’ remarkable offensive performance, which included 39 home runs and a .307 average last season, has earned him the title of a five-tool player. With the addition of Shohei Otani to the team, Betts’ stats are expected to improve even further, solidifying his position as the best player in the game.
