Giants 4-5 Dodgers
Dodger bats rough up Logan Webb
On paper, at least, the advantage should have been with San Francisco. The Dodger pitching rotation is decimated by injury and Dave Roberts had no option but to play a bullpen game. The Giants were using their ace in Logan Webb and should have been able to hold the Dodgers offense in check.
The best laid plans of mice and men...
In reality, what happened was, well... basically, Mookie Betts. He had a leadoff walk, a stolen base, a home run, a clutch base hit. And what happens when you have a leadoff hitter like Mookie? He lifts everyone else's game too. Kike Hernández stepped up. Freddie Freeman went 3 for 4.
And the bulk of this damage was inflicted on Logan Webb. Last year's second-place Cy Young pitcher was expected to keep the Dodgers' bats cool, but instead had his pitches served back to him. In the end, he could only muster 3.2 innings, giving up seven hits and all five runs.
The Giants were able to score four runs off of the Dodgers, but it was not enough. Despite the home run of Jorge Soler cancelling out Mookie Betts' shot, the lift that the Dodgers saw simply did not happen on the Giants side. Michael Conforto was picked off. The Giants got two baserunners on with no outs and came away empty handed.
Baseball is all about three things. Get them on, get them over, get them in. The Giants did the first one, but the Dodgers did all three.
The Giants have one more chance to avoid the sweep as they play game three tomorrow, but this may have been their biggest chance and they couldn't make it happen.

PITCHING
The Giants will go with their most reliable starter in Logan Webb, who finished second in last year’s Cy Young race with a 11-13 record for a 3.25 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 216.0 innings. He made his season debut against San Diego last Thursday and limited the Padres to five hits and two runs through six innings. It is not likely that he will throw a shutout today, but he can keep the Dodgers in check for a few innings to give his offense a chance to jump on top of them.
L.A. manager Dave Roberts has said this will be a bullpen game with LHP Ryan Yarbrough and RHP Michael Grove available for "some length." Grove struggled as an opener last year and has allowed seven runs in three innings this season. Yarbrough had a 4.89 ERA in 38 2/3 inning last year and has given up one run in 4 2/3 innings this season. Word is that they are going with Ryan Brasier to start, but with the fact that he threw an inning yesterday, giving up a solo home run, it is not likely that he will throw more than one or two today.
WELCOME!!!
Welcome to the Diario AS USA live commentary of Game 2 of the three game home stand as the Giants try to bounce back after yesterday’s heavy loss to the Dodgers in Chavez Ravine.
After stretching their legs yesterday, where the Dodgers cruised to a big victory on the back of some big batting by Mookie Betts and Teoscar Hernández, they sit firmly at the top of the NL West. They are looking to get some separation between themselves and the Giants tonight on the back of their offensive production.
With no true starting pitcher lined up, Los Angeles will be playing a bullpen game tonight, with no pitcher expected to give more than an inning’s work, meaning that they will not have the luxury of leaning on their defense at all, relying instead on their ability to stay out in front of any runs that the Giants may muster.
San Francisco by contrast will be looking to get back to putting up numbers themselves after being effectively silenced yesterday. Michael Conforto provided the lone glimmer of production with a solo shot in the sixth inning.
Tonight, Bob Melvin will reshuffle the lineup considerably, trying to find the formula that can bunch their power hitting together. Yesterday they had an issue of leaving runners on the bases, getting eight hits and six walks that gave only three runs. Tonight, the Dodgers bullpen should be exploitable, and the Giants are trying to find the formula to address that.
