Great Britain vs Canada: The lay of the land

As a major talent factory in baseball today, one would think that Canada would be one of the serious teams in the WBC. Indeed, the ‘noisy neighbors’ have played in all editions of the tournament, but the truth is they’ve not enjoyed a great deal of success. Consider for a moment that in the last edition of the WBC back in 2017, the Canadians finished 15th out of 16 teams and in reality, only qualified for this year’s version due to the 20-team expansion. Their overall record is 3-8, but it’s worth mentioning that they did pull off one of the biggest upsets in tournament history when they put down Team USA 8-6 in 2006′s inaugural tournament.
The British are coming
After beating Spain in qualifying Great Britain booked their ticket to their very first World Baseball Classic, meaning it’s a little hard to say what to expect from them. With a roster that is largely made up of players from the Bahamas or Americans and Canadians with British ties, this is definitely a team without the history of its opponents. On the other hand the British do have some fairly decent talent in their team such as Trayce Thompson, who is by far the best hitter on the team. There is also Nationals shortstop, Lucius Fox, who made his major-league debut last year. Last but not least, we’ve got Harry Ford who is the top prospect in the Mariners’ system. In truth, the catcher is listed as a top 100 prospect after a strong season for Low-A Modesto in 2022.
