Houston Astros’ José Altuve ejected after furious complaints
The Houston team took a decisive 10-5 victory over the New York Mets despite the ejection of their prolific Venezuelan second baseman.
During the match against New York, José Altuve of the Houston Astros was ejected after a heated argument with the umpires. This was the second time in his career that he had been ejected from a game (the first time was in 2016).
The argument started when the umpires ruled him out for hitting the ball with his foot in the seventh inning. Altuve disagreed with the decision, expressed his frustration, threw his helmet and bat on the ground, and was subsequently ejected from the game.
In the game, umpire James Jean, who was officiating behind the plate for the first time in a Major League Baseball (MLB) game, called a fair ball and an inning-ending out on a ball hit by Altuve, which had struck his foot. Although all four umpires discussed the call, they upheld it, as it was not reviewable. Altuve’s argument with Jean led to his ejection from the game.
After Altuve left the game, Mauricio Dubón replaced him at second base, and Chas McCormick took Dubón’s place in left field. Despite this incident, the Astros went on to secure a 10-5 victory over the Mets at Citi Field.
Currently, the Houston Astros are in second place in the American League West with a 42-41 record, trailing behind the Seattle Mariners, who have a 47-39 record.
