Christian Yelich became the sixth player to hit a third career cycle in MLB history when he achieved the feat against the Cincinnati Reds, and the ensured his place in history as the first player to do so three times against the same team. A cycle consists of hitting a single, a double, a triple and a home run in the same game, while a natural cycle is doing so in that order. Yelich’s cycle against the Reds was the 335th in MLB history and the first was achieved by Curry Foley in 1882 for the Buffalo Bisons against the Cleveland Blues.

Before Yelich, only five players in MLB history had even hit three career cycles. John Reilly of the Reds was the first to do so in 1890, seven years after hitting his first two in the space of a week in 1883. Bob Meusel followed in 1928 for the New York Yankees and a few years later Babe Herman completed cycles for two different teams, the Brooklyn Robins twice in 1931 and the Chicago Cubs in 1933.

It would be 82 years until another player was added to the exclusive list when Adrián Beltré hit his second cycle for the Texas Rangers in 2015, having previously done so while at the Seattle Mariners in 2008. Trea Turner became the fifth player to hit three career cycles in 2021 while at the Washington Nationals.

Pirates hold franchise cycle record

Only 14 players in MLB history have ever hit a natural cycle, most recently Gary Matthews Jr for the Texas Rangers in 2006.

In terms of franchises, the Pittsburgh Pirates hold the record for the most cycles hit with 24, while the Miami Marlins are the only current MBL team never to have hit for the cycle.

On two occasions in the MLB a father-son cycle has been achieved, first in 2004 when Daryle Ward matched his father Gary Ward’s cycle 24 years earlier, and again in 2019 when Cavan Baggio hit for the cycle, following in his father Craig’s 2002 footsteps.
