How many times has Mexico played in the World Baseball Classic?
Mexico will be one of the 20 participants in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Hopes are high for the country in their fifth appearance in the contest.
The World Baseball Classic held its debut competition in 2006, and it featured some of the best players from professional organizations in different countries. Mexico was one of the 16 nations that took part in the inaugural tournament, and the team was joined by MLB players who were previously not allowed to be part of the national squad because of league rules.
The WBC is the only international competition where Major League Baseball allows its players to be part of their respective countries’ rosters, and Mexico has taken part in all four of its editions held so far.
Mexico’s performance in the World Baseball Classic
The Mexican team reached the second round in the first Classic and finished with a 3-3 card, winning against South Africa, Canada, and the United States, with all games taking place in the US. Their losses were dealt by the US, South Korea, and eventual champion Japan. They wrapped up the tournament in sixth place.
In 2009, all 16 countries that participated in the previous contest were invited to play once again, and this time, Mexico was one of the host countries, along with Canada, Japan, and Puerto Rico. They reached round two, with all their games played on home soil, but this time, they exited the competition in eighth place with a 2-4 record.

The Mexican team’s third participation in the 2013 tournament yielded even worse results. They only played in the first round, and finished at 11th place with a 1-2 tally, their sole victory coming from their matchup against the United States.
Mexico’s results in the last World Baseball Classic held in 2017 were no better. They once again delivered a 1-2 record with a win against Venezuela, but this time they sat at 13th place in the field of 16.
Hopeful for a better record
This year, the Mexican national team’s chances of a strong finish in the increased field of 20 have improved, as they are currently ranked fifth in the world. The roster boasts stars from MLB like Los Angeles Dodgers standout pitcher Julio Urias, as well as talent from NPB and the Mexican League. However, they will be missing one valuable MLB player, as Toronto Blue Jays All-Star catcher Alejandro Kirk will not be able to represent his country.
