The Los Angeles Dodgers are World Series Champions for the second time since 2020 after defeating the New York Yankees in Game 5 from Yankee Stadium. This puts them in a tie for fifth most World Series banners in MLB history.

Othani and Freeman lead the way

Led by their electrifying lineup of power hitters, the Dodgers were the best team in baseball all season long. The won a league high 98 games to get the top seed in the National League playoffs and rolled through the San Diego Padres before meeting the New York Mets in the NLCS and then setting up a dream matchup with the New York Yankees in an East Coast vs. West Coast title series for the first time since 1981.

The Dodgers went out and got the best baseball player in the world in Shohei Othani last offseason for one specific purpose, to bring the Commissioners Trophy back to LA. They signed in from intercity rivals, the Los Angeles Angels and all Othani did was something that has never been seen before in the history of the majors. He posted a 50/50 season stealing 59 bases and hitting 54 homers.

It wasn’t just Ohtani, thought. It was Freddy Freeman catching fire at just the right time. He hit homers in the first four games of the World Series, to stretch his consecutive World Series games with a home run to six, dating back to when he was with the Atlanta Braves. It was Mookie Betts setting the tone both in the batters box and in the outfield, and Tommy Edman’s consistency with a team high (19 hits in the postseason) that lifted this team in what was an electric run to their eight World Series title.

Second World Series of the decade

The Dodgers won their eighth title and did it against the winningest team in MLB history. Their eight is impressive, but the Yankees top the charts with 27. The last of those coming in 2009. Those in New York thought this was going to be the year that the title drought ended but Othani and the Dodgers were too much for Aaron Judge and the Yankees.

The first Dodgers World Series championship came back in 1955 when they were still based in Brooklyn. The moved out to LA in the 1958 season, and since then have won it seven times, with their last one coming in 2020 when they beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Winning the World Series is always special, but when you consider that the Dodgers are the team with most World Series losses (14 different times) in the history of the MLB, that makes it all the sweeter. And the fact that they won number eight beating the Yankees is the cherry on top.
