Japan vs Venezuela: defending champions face red-hot Vinotinto in WBC quarterfinals
Japan faces Venezuela in the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Baseball Classic. The defending champions seek to advance to the semifinals in Miami.

Japan and Venezuela will face off this Saturday at LoanDepot Park in Miami at 9 p.m. ET. The defending champions will try to continue their dominance against a Venezuelan squad that enters the game in excellent form after a strong group-stage performance.
The matchup marks the beginning of the tournament’s “win-or-go-home” phase. The winner will advance to the semifinals, where they’ll face the victor of the game between Puerto Rico and Italy.
Japan arrives undefeated and among the favorites
Japan has once again proven why they are considered a powerhouse in international baseball. The team finished 4–0 in Pool C, played in Tokyo, securing first place in the group and entering the quarterfinals with plenty of momentum.

The reigning champions are aiming to defend the title they won in the previous edition and could become the first team to win back-to-back WBC titles since Japan captured the first two tournaments in 2006 and 2009.
Japan’s roster is once again headlined by superstar Shohei Ohtani, who has been one of the team’s standout performers so far with two home runs and six RBIs during the group stage. The offense has also received a big boost from Masataka Yoshida, who has matched Ohtani in both home runs and RBIs in the tournament.
Beyond their offensive power, Japan also carries an impressive streak into the matchup. The team has not lost a World Baseball Classic game since the semifinals in 2017, when they fell 2–1 to the United States national baseball team.
Venezuela aims to return to the Semifinals
Venezuela advanced to the quarterfinals after finishing 3–1 in Pool D, placing second in the group following a loss to the Dominican Republic national baseball team in their final group-stage game.
Before that defeat, Venezuela earned convincing wins against:
- Netherlands (6–2)
- Israel (11–3)
- Nicaragua (4–0)
The team has shown an offense capable of producing runs in key moments. One of the tournament’s standout hitters has been Luis Arráez, who has started the competition red-hot at the plate, going 7-for-14 with four doubles and two home runs. Another major contributor has been Ronald Acuña Jr., who currently leads the tournament in runs scored with eight.
Venezuela is hoping to return to the World Baseball Classic semifinals for the first time since 2009, which remains the team’s best finish in tournament history.

Pitching matchup: Suárez vs Yamamoto
The game will feature an intriguing pitching duel between two left-handed starters. Venezuela will send Ranger Suárez to the mound for his second appearance in the tournament. In his first outing, he pitched two innings, allowing one run and three hits against the Netherlands.
Venezuelan manager Omar López indicated that Suárez could throw between 60 and 65 pitches in this game.
Japan will counter with Yoshinobu Yamamoto, one of the team’s most important arms. In his first start of the tournament, Yamamoto threw 2.2 scoreless innings against Chinese Taipei.
The battle on the mound could prove decisive in a matchup that pits Venezuela’s surging offense against Japan’s balanced combination of hitting and deep pitching.

A first-ever WBC meeting
Despite both nations having strong traditions in international baseball, Japan and Venezuela have never faced each other in the World Baseball Classic. Saturday’s game in Miami will mark their first meeting in the history of the tournament.
With the defending champions trying to extend their dominance and Venezuela looking to reach the semifinals again, this matchup has all the ingredients to become one of the most exciting quarterfinal games of the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
