The San Diego Padres have lost eight of the last ten games in the 2023 Major League Baseball season and the immediate future looks even more complicated after losing 4-3 to the Kansas City Royals.

Manager Bob Melvin announced that Manny Machado suffered a minor fracture to his left hand during Monday’s game against the Royals. The diagnosis is still unclear and the team will know on Friday if Machado will need to spend time on the disabled list.

“Initial X-rays showed nothing. Yesterday we did a CT scan and an MRI which showed a small fracture in the metacarpal bone,” Melvin said. "We don't think it's an DL situation, but we'll wait and see how he feels and what we do over the weekend."

The third baseman did not play on Tuesday due to pain in his hand, although the initial tests came back negative, and he was not in Wednesday’s lineup.

Machado is taking it in his stride, saying, “I’m not sure how my body’s going to heal. So just take it day by day, see what it is, hopefully come back after this off-day and it’s a lot better.”

Machado says that he has seen some notable progress, adding, “Swelling’s gone down tremendously. We definitely have more range of motion today.”
