Ketel Marte joined the Arizona Diamondbacks mounting injury list on Sunday after falling awkwardly in Sunday’s 8-7 defeat to the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field.

Marte missed both of the first two games in the series against Tampa Bay and the one before that against the Colorado Rockies after suffering an injury to his left ankle colliding with catcher Garrett Stubbs on a play at second base against the Philadelphia Phillies. He aggravated the injury on a swing in the first inning during last Monday’s game and underwent an MRI scan which showed a low-grade sprain but no serious damage.

The infielder entered Sunday’s as a pinch hitter, facing reliever Pete Fairbanks in the ninth inning but his ankle appeared to give way after a check swing and he fell down to the ground. Marte was helped off the field by the D-backs medical staff.

Lovullo regrets bringing Marte back too soon

“I don’t have any updates,” manager Torey Lovullo said afterwards. “[He’s] just being evaluated right now. Nothing more than what we originally saw. It didn’t look great. He creates a lot of force when he pushes off the ground. A very strong man. It just got him. We probably need to re-evaluate and find out how quickly we can get him back. There’s no way in the world I would have ever put him in the game, if I felt like something like yesterday was going to happen. Of course, there’s a regret, and I wish I had given him an extra day”.

It’s a fresh setback for Arizona, who are already without first baseman Christian Walker (strained left oblique) and catcher Gabriel Moreno (strained left adductor).

The Diamondbacks face the Miami Marlins at LoanDepot park on Monday 19 August at 6:40 p.m. ET / 3:40 p.m. PT.
