Colombia’s Vaqueros de Montería concluded their participation in the Caribbean Series 2023 with three consecutive defeats, two back-to-back by Venezuela and then one against Mexico. When the two faced in the opening round of the tournament, Mexico won by the slimmest margin. And so it was again. Mexico’s Cañeros de Los Mochis took third place in the tournament, finishing on a high note.

The first innings belonged to the pitchers. For Colombia, Carlos Quevedo pitched five innings, concluding his day’s work giving up 3 hits and 1 walk, notching up 4 strikeouts. With his offense unable to score, Quevado left the game a no-decision. For Mexico Jeff Kinley raffled off the job on the mound in 6 innings, received 4 hits, 1 strike out, and gave up no walks, a job good enough to be the winning pitcher.

Kevin Escorcia, the Vaqueros’ first reliever, gave up two hits to his first two batters, one of them Irving López, who would go to third on a fielder’s choice, which Joey Terdoslavich would take advantage of, slapping a single into center field to drive in the only run of the afternoon.

The Mexican relievers did their part, too, with first César Vargas getting them out of a jam in the seventh, before working through the eighth inning for no damage, retiring his opponents in order and the door was slammed shut by Jake Sánchez who gave up a single before dominating Dilson Herrera, Fabián Pertuz and Andrés Ángulo, giving the victory to Mexico.

The Cañeros de Los Mochis finish in third place in the 2023 Caribbean Series, with a record of 6 wins and 3 losses, while Vaqueros de Montería ended their campaign with 4 wins and 5 defeats.
