Milwaukee Brewers’ J.C. Mejía suspended by MLB 162 games, but what is Stanozolol the drug he tested positive for?

It would appear that the Brewers’ pitcher didn’t learn a lesson after his last sanction. Perhaps the length of this suspension will force him to rethink.

The Milwaukee Brewers will be without their right-handed pitcher for quite some time after MLB suspended him for a significant period of time after he tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

MLB suspends Brewers’ J.C. Mejía for PED

According to reports on Wednesday, Milwaukee Brewers pitcher J.C. Mejía was suspended for 162 games by Major League Baseball after he tested positive for Stanozolol, a performance-enhancing substance. Indeed, Mejía was found to be in violation of the league’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, according to a league-issued press release. Unbelievably, this is the second time in 16 months that the 27-year-old has been suspended following a positive test for Stanozolol. In May of last year, he was suspended for a total of 80 games. To be clear, should there be a third time, the Dominican Republic native will be banned for life in accordance with league protocols.

What is Stanozolol?

According to the official website of the United States Anti-Doping Agency, Stanozolol is a “...synthetic steroid that is derived from testosterone and has anabolic and androgenic properties. It first came on the market in 1962. Over time, the marketing and labeling of Stanozolol has been altered due to FDA requirements and changes in the drug market. In 2010, it was withdrawn from the U.S. market. It is classified as a Schedule III controlled substance under federal regulation under the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2004 and the updated Designer Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2014.”

What have the Brewers lost in J.C. Mejía?

In total Mejía has made 28 career appearances in MLB. Nine of those were this very season, during which he registered an 8.32 ERA (52 ERA+) and a 1.91 strikeout-to-walk ratio. If you didn’t know, the Brewers originally acquired him from the Cleveland Guardians in November 2021 for David Fry. It’s worth noting that Fry has gone on to appear in 53 games. Incidentally, Mejía has been on the injured list with shoulder inflammation since August 13th, something that will count toward his suspension which he will serve without pay.
