Everybody loves the long ball. Even when you know, perhaps especially because you know, that baseball is about more than just home runs. No matter. Home runs and home run hitters light up MLB like nothing else.

Eight sluggers - four from the American League and four from the National League - are set to compete in this year’s event. MLB is spicing things up with some new rules to make the Derby even more thrilling for fans and viewers at home. In short, it’s all about watching these guys smash some serious dingers!

Who’s in the 2024 Home Run Derby?

The lineup is set, featuring these heavy hitters:

  • 1B Pete Alonso, New York Mets
  • 3B Alec Bohm, Philadelphia Phillies
  • OF Adolis García, Texas Rangers
  • SS Gunnar Henderson, Baltimore Orioles
  • OF Teoscar Hernández, Los Angeles Dodgers
  • DH Marcell Ozuna, Atlanta Braves
  • 3B Jose Ramírez, Cleveland Guardians
  • SS Bobby Witt Jr., Kansas City Royals

Unfortunately for baseball fans everywhere, Shohei Ohtani won’t be joining this year. The Dodgers star is sitting out to focus on rehabbing his injured pitching elbow.

New rules for the 2024 Home Run Derby

This year, the Derby isn’t sticking to a strict tournament format. Instead, all eight players will slug it out in the first round, with the top four advancing to the semifinals based on their home run totals. Ties will be broken by the longest homer each player hits.

In the first two rounds, each player gets three minutes or 40 pitches (whichever comes first) to crush as many homers as possible, with one 45-second timeout allowed (but not during bonus time, which is awarded for homers over 425 feet). The finals are a bit tighter, with just two minutes or 27 pitches.

The Home Run Derby winner will take home a cool $1 million from a total prize pool of $2.5 million. The runner-up isn’t too shabby either, collecting $750,000.

When is the 2024 All-Star Home Run Derby?

Mark your calendars for Monday, July 15, at 8 p.m. ET, when Globe Life Field in Arlington will host the 2024 Home Run Derby.
