Orioles’ Tyler O’Neill extends incredible MLB home run record
With a three-run homer against the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday, O’Neill reiterated his status as the MLB’s Opening Day expert.

The Baltimore Orioles got the 2025 MLB season off to a winning start with a resounding 12-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. It was a comprehensive win for the Orioles, who were helped by another home run form their Opening Day specialist.
For the sixth season in a row, Tyler O’Neill started the season with a homer to extend his own MLB record for the longest streak of Opening Day home runs. This time O’Neill drilled a deep shot over the right-side wall off a pitch from Jose Berrios.
O’Neill finished the game 3-for-3 to crown a perfect debut with his new team. O’Neill spent six season with the St. Louis Cardinals before a one-year stint with the Boston Red Sox in 2024. Ahead of the new season he penned a $49.5 million deal with the Orioles and has already started to repay that investment.
Longest Opening Day streaks in the MLB
With Thursday’s latest homer, O’Neill’s Opening Day streak now spans six seasons. The first four all came with the Cardinals, by which point he had matched the MLB record, jointly held by Todd Hundley (1994-97), Gary Carter (1977-80) and Yogi Berra (1955-58).
The following year, in his sole season with the Red Sox, O’Neill struck again in his debut and claimed the record for himself. This year he extends it to an improbable six straight seasons and he wasn’t the only one setting records against the Blue Jays.
The Orioles hit six home runs on Opening Day for the first time in franchise history. Alongside O’Neill’s, there were two homers apiece for Adley Rutschman and Cedric Mullines, while Jordan Westburg completed the famous sextet.
However there is still one Opening Day record that O’Neill can target. He now has a total of six Opening Day home runs, just two short of the all-time MLB record. Adam Dunn, Ken Griffey Jr. and Frank Robinson each managed eight homers to start the season. O’Neill, still only 29 years old, will fancy his chances of catching that pack.
