Rangers sweep Orioles, advance to ALCS

Nathan Eovaldi spectacular as Rangers advance to ALCS

The Orioles have not been swept since 2022. Nobody has managed it all season. Until now.

The Texas Rangers have been blistering hot since the playoffs began, coming together at the right time and sweeping through both the Wild Card and the ALDS in just five total games.

Nathan Eovaldi was a huge part of the reason why the Rangers lead the AL West for pretty much all of the season, and his dip in August and September coincided with their fall from the top. Much ink was used up in the waning weeks of the regular season on discussing how the Rangers were a spent force, how Eovaldi was a shadow of his former self.

But it looks like that was all premature. Eovaldi is back to his old self and what is more, the Rangers offense has come back to life.

As the Rangers lost three of four to the Mariners, Bruce Bochy took the team aside and told them that they were not going about things the right way. That boom-or-bust hitting was not the way that they would win. That they needed to use all of the field. Get to Tampa and all of a sudden they began doing exactly that.

With Jacob deGrom out for the season, the Rangers have done miracles with Dane Dunning and Eovaldi leading the way. Late-season signings of Jordan Montgomery and Max Scherzer pushed things into the stratosphere. And with signs that Scherzer may be coming back for the ALCS, there is ample reason to feel excited about this team.

The huge offensive production by Corey Seager, Josh Jung, Leody Taveras, and recently by Evan Carter makes Texas almost unbeatable.

The Rangers have not been in the playoffs since 2011 and tonight was their first post season game ever in their new stadium. The 40,000-strong crowd were electric and they will certainly relish every minute of every game, adding a new element to the mix for visiting teams.

The Rangers are the first team to book their place in the Championship series and they will face either Houston or Minnesota. The Astros are 2-1 up in that series and should they advance, then the ALCS would be an all-Texas affair.

Most of the Astros faithful are unconcerned about the Rangers, even scornful based on their meeting in the dying weeks of the season when Houston swept the Rangers. But that is an error. This Ranger team bears no resemblance to the beat up, injury-laden squad that faced the Astros all those weeks ago. This Ranger team is a team on the rise, with all cylinders firing. And in that state, they are looking like the best team in the world.

PITCHING

The pitching duel is stacked decidedly in Texas’ favor for Game 3, with the Orioles going with Dean Kremer tonight. Kremer is a solid member of the rotation, making 32 starts in the regular season, going 13-5 with a 4.12 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP over 172.2 innings. But he will be making his post season debut and that is not something that can be ignored, particularly in what is sure to be a raucous Globe Life Field. Additionally, as an Israeli, Kremer will have his thoughts of his family in the war-torn middle east weighing heavily.

Texas is going with Nathan Eovaldi, who was lights-out before going on the IL in mid summer and is showing a glimpse of being back to his old self. Through the regular season he was 12-5 with a 3.63 ERA across 25 starts, posting a 1.14 WHIP in 144 innings. In his last outing against the Rays in the Wild Card, he went 6.2 innings, striking out eight and surrendering just one run.

WELCOME!!!

Welcome to the Diario AS USA live commentary of Game 3 of the 2023 ALDS matchup between the Baltimore Orioles and the Texas Rangers from Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

As the series moves down to Dallas, you may feel like there is a whiff of Twilight Zone about it all. The Baltimore Orioles have had a Cinderella season, winning 101 games this season and topping the AL East. The Texas Rangers have had a similar season, although tarnished by a mid-summer dip that saw them finish with just 90 wins and having to come here via the Wild Card route. A season ago, neither of these teams were within sight of the playoffs by a very long way.

And now on the eve of ALDS Game 3, the script is not only flipped, but torn up and thrown out of the window. The Rangers, who struggled through September, tumbling their way down from a six game lead in the AL West to joint-second in just two weeks, and lost three of the last four games to Seattle, are now 4-0 in the post season. A win tonight will see them complete their second playoff sweep in as many weeks.

The Orioles were rewarded for topping the American League and coming in as the number one seed with time off and home field advantage against the lowest seeded team in the playoffs. None of that has mattered. Baltimore is shell-shocked, stunned after dropping the first two home games and now having to come down to Texas with their backs firmly planted against the wall.

The O’s need to win tonight or their Cinderella season is over and the ugly stepsister gets the Prince. And to boot, they will have to win in front of a crowd that has been waiting seven years to see their team in the postseason again. A new ballpark has been built since the Rangers were playing in October. You can bet that unlike the scenes in Tampa, tonight Globe Life Field will be packed and loud.

The Rangers are the most dangerous team in baseball when their offense is on, and right now it is definitely on. They are on the brink of doing something that nobody this season has been able to do and that is to sweep the Baltimore Orioles.

The Orioles on the other hand are fighting an uphill battle deep in enemy territory. They might well remember Pancho Villa’s last words. “Don’t let it end like this,” he said as he lay dying, “tell them I said something.”
