2024 Seoul Series: Padres 15-11 Dodgers
The Padres win shootout with the Dodgers in highest scoring freeway series ever
Where Game 1 of the Seoul Series was a pitching duel, Game 2 went the other way entirely, as the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers got involved in an old fashioned shoot out.
The much anticipated unveiling of Yoshinobu Yamamoto by the Dodgers was shocking in it's ineffectiveness. The Padres pasted him for five runs in the first inning, Yamamoto's only inning today.
The Dodgers did what they do best, chipping away at the deficit, clawing back a run in the first, another in the second, matching a four run third by the Padres, run for run, and making a runaway loss very close. They kept pace with the Padres from then on, but could never overcome the mountain that lay in front of them.
In the end, the 15-11 score represents the highest-scoring ever freeway series as well as the most runs ever scored by the Dodgers in a loss. But the intersting thing about Game 2 is that nearly all of those runs were chiseled out of walks, steals, and singles. There were only two home runs in the game, one a two-run shot by Mookie Betts and then a three-run blast from Manny Machado. Five runs out of a 26-run total came from home runs.
Max Muncy is another Dodger who had a stinker of a day with three separate ground balls that got under his glove, leading to another three runs.
But none of that can take away from what the Padres did, always staying on the front foot, keeping one step ahead of the Dodgers. Every time the Dodgers cut into their lead, San Diego found a way to answer back, stretching it just a little bit more.
The home run by Manny Machado was one of the furthest hit balls in recent memory. It was over 400 feet officially, but the effect was of one much more than that. It was an emphatic exclamation point by a Padres team that often is found lacking when facing the Dodgers.
Much press will be expended on what went wrong for Yamamoto, but the Dodgers shouldn't take too much stock in that. Some days, it just isn't your day. He is a great pitcher who knows how to win. His adjustment to MLB is taking a bit of time, but have no doubt that one day it will all just click into place, and when it does, he will be a force to be reckoned with.
For now, both teams head back across the Pacific to finish up Spring Training and join the rest of the league as the wider MLB has their opening games on the 28th.

National Anthems
The anthems for Game 2 are performed by Baekhyun, from the popular K-Pop group EXO. The English pronunciation wobbled a bit there, but hey! it is better than my Korean, so well done young man!
Again, as yesterday, the South Korean anthem is truly beautiful. It is called the Aegukga. Here are the translation of the lyrics into English:
1. Until that day when the waters of the East Sea run dry and Mount Baekdusan is worn away, God protect and preserve our nation; Hurray to Korea.
2. As the pine atop the near mountain stands firm, unchanged through wind and frost, as if wrapped in armor, so shall our resilient spirit.
3. The autumn sky is void and vast, high and cloudless; the bright moon is our heart, undivided and true.
4. With this spirit and this mind, give all loyalty, in suffering or in joy, to the love of country.
The biggest news around baseball is always Shohei Ohtani and now that his mystery bride has been revealed to be none other than Japanese basketball star Mamiko Tanaka, the camera just can't get enough of her! Our very own Jen Bubel takes a look at her reactions from Game 1 right here.
The Japanese sensation appears to be the victim of a massive embezzlement scam that was perpetrated by his own interpreter, but who is Ippe Mizuhara? Our very own Paul Rudder takes a look at the bizarre news right here.

PITCHING
The Padres will go with Joe Musgrove, who had a blazing start last season before injury derailed him. In the end, he only threw 97.1 innings, his lowest since his rookie season. He came back just before the end of the season and has been cleared for a full off season workout, showing no ill effects through spring training so far.
The Dodgers will go with their new $325 million signing in Yoshinobu Yamamoto who was the best pitcher in Japan through seven seasons in the NPL, winning their triple crown in three consecutive seasons. He has struggled to adjust somewhat, posting an eye-watering 8.38 ERA in the Cactus League where he has had to deal with a problem where he was tipping his pitches.
WELCOME!!!
Welcome to the Diario AS USA live commentary of Game 2 of the 2024 Seoul Series as the Padres take on the Dodgers in Seoul, South Korea at the Gocheok Sky Dome.
The 2024 MLB regular season got underway yesterday with a come-from-behind 5-2 Dodgers win that saw a little of everything. There was a smattering of small ball, far too many errors, and a big eighth inning, plus Shohei Ohtani faced ex-team mate Yu Darvish for the first time in his career, going 1 for 2 with a single and a ground out.
Both teams have a list of things that they would like to work on today. For the Dodgers, the batting is the key. They have one of the most powerful lineups in the game and could only muster ground balls and a few squib hit singles. No hit made it as far as the warning track. For any other team, that would be fine, but for a billion-dollar power puncher like the Dodgers, that has to improve.
For the Padres, the killer was errors. They had four pitch timer violations, which directly or indirectly was responsible for three of the runs that they surrendered. Without those mistakes, they surrender only five walks, still too many, but better than the nine that they wound up with.
Neither team has messed with their lineup today, fielding the same squad as yesterday. The top end of that Dodger lineup is as strong as you will see in baseball, while the young man for the Padres, Jackson Merrill showed some promise in center field and he is not bothered in the slightest by hitting at this level.
The nominal home team is the Los Angeles Dodgers.
