Panama drops first game as Venezuela clinch semi final berth
Venezuela come from behind to hand Panama first loss
For the first six innings, this game was playing out according to the script that Panama had written in this Caribbean Series. While it may have shocked everyone how well they had played, up until then, they were true to form. In control, out in front, and cruising.
And then a momentary wobble, a bloop, and... another bloop? But whatever it was, it was enough to turn the entire game on it's head.
After walking the bases full, Saldana gives up a little bloop to shallow right. It was the perfect storm of being too deep for the first or second baseman to get to it, and too shallow for the right fielder to make the play. In the end, Erick Barría actually got a glove on it, but when in fell to the ground, all three baserunners were safe at home.
Venezuela were out in front for the first time and they simply didn't let up. Panama clawed one back, but Alcides Escobar's solo home run negated that.
So now, the top of the table is flipped. With the same record, Venezuela now moves into first place, securing for themselves a semi final berth no matter the outcome of tomorrow's game with Nicaragua. Panama have another tough game tomorrow with the Dominican Republic, and while they could slip to fourth place, they are in the semi final's no matter what happens there either.
But oh, what a mighty fall that would be! To have gone from undefeated and in firm control, Panama are now on much shakier ground.
Tomorrow's games will determine so much and with this win, Venezuela have made sure that they are right in the thick of it.

WELCOME!!!
Welcome to the Diario AS USA live commentary of the 2024 Caribbean Series as Panama’s Federales de Chiriqui clash with Venezuela’s Tiburones de La Guaira in Miami’s LoanDepot Park.
Well, well, well. Who thought that we would be here? The game of the day, perhaps the entire Series, between an undefeated Panama, sitting at the top of the table, and Venezuela, just below them.
The Federales de Chiriqui are the first team to secure themselves a spot in the semi finals after they proved to be too much for Puerto Rico last night. A win or loss for them can change their seeding but not see them knocked out.
For Venezuela, it is a more complicated thing entirely. While they are fairly secure in their semi final outlook, a loss tonight would see them drop in seeding, perhaps as low as four depending on other outcomes around the tournament, leaving Venezuela in need of a win against Nicaragua to seal their fate.
