Phillies vs Diamondbacks summary online: stats, scores and highlights | MLB NLCS Game 5 highlights
Wheeler silences D-backs in Phillies rout
Late surge of Phillies home runs upend D-backs
In the opening innings, it looked like it could come down to the wire. A swinging bunt and a brace of singles managed to put the Phillies up in the first by 2-0 but that is where it remained for five long innings. Both Zac Gallen and Zack Wheeler looked to be on top form.
In the end, it was Gallen who blinked first, giving up back to back solo blasts in the sixth to Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper. And even then, it seemed that surely things would turn in the bottom part of the inning. But it didn't. As it turned out, Wheeler went on for two more outstanding innings, surrendering only a solo shot in the seventh to Alek Thomas.
The inability of the Diamondbacks to put anything together offensively was irritating, and then infuriating. The Phillies scored in drips, but the D-backs could not even muster that much.
And then, finally, the straw that broke the camel's back was the two-run shot hit by JT Realmuto in the eighth. It put a solid nail into the Diamondbacks' coffin, coming as it did as a result of an error. Ketel Marte dropped an easy out when Schwarber hit led off. Realmuto should never have been at the plate at all. But he was, and that emphasized the kind of night that Arizona faced.
The series now tilts decidedly in Philadelphia's favor. Having won the first two games at home, they lost the next two on the road. This win sees them head back home up by three games to two. Arizona will have a difficult hill to climb making it through one game in Philly, much less two, but that is exactly what they must do if they are to get to the World Series.
Game 6 will see Aaron Nola square off with Merrill Kelly at Citizens Bank Park on Monday night and, if needed, Game 7 will be there on Tuesday.

WELCOME!!!
Welcome to the Diario AS USA live commentary of Game 5 of the NLCS between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Arizona Diamondbacks from Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.
In Game 4, the Phillies experienced a meltdown, allowing the Diamondbacks to claw their way back into the series. Both teams used a combined total of 16 pitchers, something both need to avoid going forward.
In what has become a war of attrition, these two teams are putting their bullpens under immense strain, perhaps to breaking point. What they need, desperately, is a pitcher who can go deep into the game.
Enter stage left, the matchup from Game 1.
The D-backs will start Zac Gallen, and the Phillies will go with Zack Wheeler. Both of these pitchers have been phenomenal in the regular season, but this is October and much like the Mickey Mouse Club’s Wednesday, this is Anything Can Happen Day.
