Pirates’ Paul Skenes suffers brutal Opening Day meltdown vs. Mets
The Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher didn’t have quite the 2026 debut fans were expecting, getting pulled in the first inning against the Mets.

Pittsburgh Pirates fans were hoping for a strong start to the 2026 season from pitcher Paul Skenes, fresh off a standout performance for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. Instead, Skenes’ Opening Day debut against the New York Mets at Citi Field quickly turned into a historic and painful outing.
Skenes pulled in the first inning on Pirates’ Opening Day
Skenes lasted just two-thirds of an inning, giving up four hits, five earned runs, and two walks while striking out only one batter. His ERA briefly spiked to an eye-popping 67.50, a number almost unheard of in MLB history, even in a debut.

The struggles weren’t entirely on Skenes, though. Two early defensive errors by shortstop Oneil Cruz extended the first inning, turning what might have been a two-run frame into a five-run rally for New York. Analysts note that without those mistakes, Skenes could have escaped the inning with minimal damage, showing how early-season jitters and defensive miscues combined to make this debut particularly brutal.

Despite the rough start, history suggests that one bad outing doesn’t define a pitcher’s career. Many young MLB starters have bounced back after disastrous debuts, using early struggles as motivation to adjust and improve.
The Pirates fell 11–7 to the Mets, a disappointing result for a team that had high hopes heading into the season. The margin for error in the majors is slim, but early adversity could provide Skenes a foundation for growth as the season unfolds.
Fans will be watching closely to see how Skenes rebounds from what may go down as one of the most dramatic Opening Day disasters in recent MLB history, both in terms of ERA and the defensive mishaps that contributed to it. The Pirates are set to continue their road series with New York, with Game 2 on Saturday, March 28 and Game 3 on Sunday, March 29.
