Both teams arrive at this stage through very different paths. Puerto Rico met expectations by advancing from their group, while Italy has become one of the biggest surprises of the tournament after completing a perfect group stage.
The winner will move on to the semifinals at LoanDepot Park in Miami, where they will face the victor of the matchup between Japan and Venezuela.
Italy: The tournament’s biggest surprise
Italy has been one of the most eye-catching teams of the first round. The squad finished 4-0 in Pool B, securing first place in the group with victories over:
- Brazil (8-0)
- Great Britain (7-4)
- Puerto Rico (8-6)
- Mexico (9-1)
One of the most significant wins came against the United States, an 8–6 victory that pushed the tournament favorite to the brink of elimination in the group stage.
Italy’s offense has been explosive throughout the tournament. The team has 12 home runs in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, just two shy of the single-tournament record set by Mexico in 2009.
One of the standout performers has been first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino, who delivered one of the most memorable moments of the group stage by hitting three home runs in a single game against Mexico, becoming the first player in World Baseball Classic history to accomplish that feat.
In addition to their power at the plate, Italy has also received strong pitching performances at key moments during the tournament.

Puerto Rico advances behind strong pitching
Puerto Rico enters the quarterfinals after finishing 3–1 in the group stage, advancing to the WBC quarterfinals for the sixth consecutive time.
The Caribbean squad recorded victories against:
- Colombia (5–0)
- Panama (4–3 in extra innings)
- Cuba (4–1)
Their only loss came against Italy, who won 8–6 when the two teams met during the group stage.
Unlike Italy, Puerto Rico’s success has been largely driven by their pitching staff. The team’s pitchers currently own the best ERA in the tournament at 1.22 across 37 innings.
Offensively, Puerto Rico has not had the same impact as their opponent. The team has hit just one home run in the tournament, courtesy of Darell Hernaiz, highlighting the contrast in playing styles heading into the quarterfinal matchup.
Pitching matchup: Lugo vs Aldegheri
The game will also feature an intriguing duel between the starting pitchers.
Puerto Rico will send right-hander Seth Lugo to the mound. Lugo delivered a strong outing during the group stage, throwing four scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out three batters.
Italy will counter with left-hander Sam Aldegheri, one of the breakout pitchers of the tournament. In his World Baseball Classic debut, the young pitcher threw 4.2 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts, allowing just one hit.
The pitching matchup could prove decisive in a game that pits Italy’s powerful offense against Puerto Rico’s dominant pitching.
Puerto Rico holds the historical edge
Although Italy has emerged as one of the tournament’s surprise teams, the head-to-head history in the World Baseball Classic favors Puerto Rico.
The two teams previously met in the 2013 and 2017 tournaments, both times during the group stage, and Puerto Rico won both games.
Puerto Rico also has far more experience in the tournament’s later rounds. The team reached the semifinals in 2013 and 2017, advancing to the final both times, though they ultimately fell short in the championship game.
Italy, meanwhile, is trying to reach the World Baseball Classic semifinals for the first time in their history.
