Rangers unable to produce as Mariners take game two
In game one, the Texas Rangers were in control. From the beginning of the game until two outs in the ninth, when the Mariners pulled off a stunning comeback.
In game two, the Rangers were never in control. Often, they were barely in the game.
That is not to say that the early innings weren't contested. Far from it. Nathan Eovaldi was on fire for three innings, until he gave up two dingers in one inning. And even then, Texas still had their chances. All in all, the Rangers left 12 runners stranded on base. But with only three base hits by Texas, nothing ever had a chance to spark. The most prolific offense in the American League looked like they were sleepwalking.
Defensively, there was one clanger when Taveras got turned around on a Suárez hit, but overall, the Mariners were able to score on walks and Texas mistakes, putting up eight runs on only six hits. That is a disgrace at any level, to surrender more runs than hits, and is an example of a team who is simply not in the game.
The complicated news for Texas is that the Astros and Mariners both have gained ground on them. If they don't get a win against the Mariners, the Rangers could let the division slip from their fingers.
The good news for them, however, is that the Rangers are still in control of their own destiny. If they can put this behind them and get a win, then they can rest easy. Bruce Bochy confirmed that tomorrow, Andrew Heaney will start for Texas in game three.
For Seattle, the news is all good. They have taken the bull by the horns, making their own case and keeping their Wild Card hopes alive. They could use an Astros loss or two to help them along, but they have no control over that. What they can control is Texas, and so far, they are doing the business.
If they can stay on the front foot, then the AL West could get very wild indeed.

The Wild West
This complicates things further in the AL West. The Rangers are still in first place, but with an Astros win today in Arizona, they are only one game back. Seattle are just two games back. It is conceivable that Houston wins the division. It is also possible for the Mariners to squeak into the Wild Card slot.
If both of those come to pass, then Texas, as inconceivable as it sounds, would be out of the playoffs entirely.
The AL West is wild.
MARINERS WIN
Mitch Garver goes after the first pitch and flies out to center fielder Sam Haggerty to end the game.
Sweet relief for the Rangers and they will need to find out what went wrong today as tomorrow becomes a must-win game for them.
Josh H Smith jumps on the first pitch and flies one out to left field. Dominic Canzone gets under it and puts it away for the second out.
Ezequiel Duran gets his first at bat of the day and works a full count. The payoff pitch misses low and that is the second walk of the inning.
Evan Carter comes to the plate and bounces the first pitch over to second. Rojas goes to first for the 4-3 out as Grossman advances to second. One away

The Rangers are down to their last three outs and Robbie Grossman will lead things off.
PITCHING CHANGE
Dominic Leone will replace Eduard Bazardo on the mound.
Luis Torrens will remain in the game as the designated hitter as Sam Haggerty moves from left to center and Dominic Canzone replaces Julio Rodriguez and will man left field.
Ty France comes up and flies one to left. Same spot, same result. Grossman hauls it in to end the inning.
Luis Torrens will pinch hit for the DH Mike Ford with one on and one out. He flies one to left field where Grossman gets under it for the second out.
Sam Haggerty will see his first at bat of the game and works the count full before holding off on ball four to draw the walk.

Cal Raleigh will lead off for the Mariners in the eighth and goes down swinging as he chases an elevated fastball.
Austin Hedges will get his first at bat with two out and two on.
On three pitches, he goes down swinging to end the inning.

They have made quite a few defensive changes in fact. In the outfield, Evan Carter will shift from left to center as Robbie Grossman takes Leody Taveras' spot and playing in left field, while Travis Jankowski replaces Adolis Garcia in right field.

The Rangers are in a world of hurt here as the Mariners tack a grand slam onto an already healthy lead. At the end of four, Seattle leads 8-0.

JP Crawford will come to the plate to face the new pitcher and is struggling to find the zone.
Crawford takes the 3-1 pitch and ropes it over the right field wall. A line drive that never dropped and the Rangers are in a deep hole here. Seattle is up 8-0 here

That is going to do it for Eovaldi as Bruce Bochy comes out and takes the baseball. Brock Burke will take over on the mound and he inherits three baserunners.
MARINERS SCORE
Josh Rojas now at the plate and Eovaldi gets out in front with two quick strikes.
Rojas bounces one straight back up the middle for a single. One run will score.
Jarred Kelenic comes to the plate and Eovaldi is in a spot of bother.
Again the count is worked full. This time, Eovaldi finds the pitch he needs with a low cutter that gets Kelenic swinging for strike three. That is a big out.
France works the count to full before the payoff pitch hits him. The bases are now loaded with no outs.

There is some work going on in the Rangers bullpen.

That is going to do it for Bryan Woo as Tayler Saucedo is summoned from the bullpen.
I've never understood this move. Woo has just gotten two quick outs. He is still pitching well. Why not let him finish the inning? Strict pitch counts, particularly now, at a point in the season when you need everybody to give everything, seems silly.
Leody Taveras will now come up and yanks one to first base. Ty France is playing deep and nabs it, underhanding it to Woo covering the bag. Two away.

Jonah Heim will lead off for the Rangers in the fourth and Texas need to find a response. Woo is still on the mound although Saucedo continues to work in the bullpen.
Cal Raleigh comes to the plate now and bloops one to shallow center. Seager drifts back from short and makes the catch to end the inning.
The Rangers are in a world of hurt as the Mariners score three runs that inning. End of three, 3-0 Seattle.
MARINERS SCORE
Eugenio Suárez now comes up and hits a long shot to center field. Taveres looked to have a bead on it, but over ran the hit. He gets twisted up and the ball makes it to the wall!
Crawford scores on the two out double from Suárez!
Julio Rodriguez comes up now with one out and one on.
Eovaldi finds the zone again and Rodriguez strikes out swinging. Two away.
JP Crawford now comes up and will face an Eovaldi who looks shaken. He can't find the zone and walks Crawford on four straight.
HOME RUN MARINERS!
Josh Rojas comes up and jumps on the first pitch, crushing it into the right field stands. Two huge solo shots and the Mariners lead 2-0.
Jarred Kelenic comes up now and works the count to full before the payoff from Eovaldi is grounded to second. Marcus Semien fields it and goes to first for the first out.
Bottom 3rd
Ty France leads off for Seattle and wastes no time at all in smoking a hanging pitch waaaayyy over the left field wall!
The Mariners are on the board with a leadoff solo home run!
Josh Jung comes up now with two outs and the bases loaded.
He runs the count full before flaring one out to left field for Kelenic to end the inning.
The Rangers leave the bases loaded and have stranded six runners in three innings.
Taylor Saucedo is beginning to get loose for the Mariners.
Lowe continues his at bat and works it to 2-2 before being hit in the foot by one that got away from Woo.
That will load the bases and the Mariners bullpen begins to stir.

Cal Raleigh leads off for the Mariners in the second and falls quickly into an 0-2 hole.
Eovaldi is throwing high-90s tonight.

Carter shows good discipline in taking the next two balls before getting jelly-legged by a four-seamer that runs the bottom rail.

A swinging strike and three balls brings the count to 3-2 before the payoff delivery finds that inside edge for a called strike three. That, after all I said, was a beautifully placed pitch! Two down.

PITCHING
The Rangers will call on their ace in Nathan Eovaldi tonight. Easily the best pitcher in baseball up until the All Star break, Eovaldi has struggled in the back half of the season after forearm tightness saw him go on the injured list in August.
Last week, the right hander had a stinker of an outing in Arlington against Seattle, giving up five runs on six hits in five innings. This was, however, an aberration for Eovaldi. Normally, he is a solid arm, and while not as lights out as he was in June, he has not given up five runs since April 12 or six hits since June 10.
The Mariners will lean on Bryan Woo to get that much-needed win. This is a much more tricky prospect, with Texas having their way with him both times that they have faced him this year. Currently in his rookie season, Woo is having a solid year. But he will need to do better tonight or he could find himself getting an early rest.

Welcome to the Diario AS USA live commentary of game two of the final four-game series of the regular season between the Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners as the AL West comes down to the wire.
We are ramping up into the final days of the regular season and will hit the ground running with full coverage of the MLB post season as the battle to get to a 2023 World Series champion heats up.
The Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners are in the middle of a heavyweight fight for their playoff lives. The Rangers are currently in first place in the AL West and needing only one win to clinch a playoff berth. With the third-place Seattle Mariners fresh off being swept by the Houston Astros, they must have felt that last night was their moment, only to be dealt a heavy gut-punch by a comeback walkoff win by the Mariners.
The Rangers can still clinch a spot in the post season with any result other than being swept this weekend.
As for the Mariners, they are in much more dire straits than Texas is. They are one game behind Houston in the Wild Card race and need to win here and hope for a Houston loss to Arizona in order to get them into position to make the playoffs.
Should Seattle pull off the unthinkable and sweep the Rangers, there could potentially be a three-way tie at the top of the AL West. This division is coming down to the wire!
