Red Sox vs Yankees preview

Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox have struggled mightily this season, and while they can take some solace in the fact that the AL East is far and away the toughest division in MLB, sitting dead last in it, 12 games behind the Rays, certainly won’t help them.

The team has struggled for a few years now, but historically the Sox are so chock full of talent that they can make a decent run at the playoffs, even when they are falling apart. 2023, however, has seen a drop in fortunes that is unreal.

The off season saw the Red Sox lose some of the best gloves on their defense, particularly Xander Bogaerts, to free agency. And while Boston managed to pick up a hot bat in Justin Turner, it has been the defensive errors that have made all of the difference to their season.

To be sure, heating up a number of their bats would more than make up for their deficiencies, but the Red Sox are quickly running out of season in which to do it. We are now in June, the All-Star break is just around the corner. At 12 games behind, the Sox will have a tough time making up ground on this AL East.

New York Yankees

While the Yankees can take solace in the fact that they are not in as bad a spot as the Red Sox, they are not terribly far away from panic stations either. At 6.5 games out of first place, New York is in danger of letting the Orioles and Rays slip from view.

There are signs that the Yankees are capable of making a strong run at the division, such as taking the series from Los Angeles with two strong wins. But their dropping series to both Baltimore and Tampa is worrying, as is their inability to put big numbers on the board.

Recent returns of some of their big stars from injury could see the pinstripes headed into a solid middle third of the season, with Giancarlo Stanton, Josh Donaldson, and Anthony Rizzo all back after spending some time recuperating from dings and strains.

Red Sox vs Yankees prediction

Overall, the New York Yankees have a 1234-1013 record versus the Red Sox spanning the last 120 years, and while the two teams are evenly matched at the moment, the slightly hotter bats of the Yankees, together with their rested lineup, should see them through. Look for New York to win close, low-scoring games across the series. The Red Sox should be able to avoid being swept, but only just.
