Report: Yankees re-sign Anthony Rizzo to multi-year deal
Free agent first baseman Anthony Rizzo will reportedly stay with the New York Yankees for the next three years in exchange for $51 million.
Anthony Rizzo was one of the biggest free agents heading into the 2023 Major League Baseball season after he declined a contract option that would pay him $16 million. Now, the first baseman has decided to stay with the New York Yankees.
Based on a report by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Rizzo’s contract with the Yankees is for two years with $40 million guaranteed money, paying him $17 million per year and providing for an early termination option. The agreement could be extended for one more year for another $17 million, for a total of $51 million in three campaigns.
The 33-year-old played in 130 regular-season games for the Yankees and posted .224/.338/.480 averages after hitting 104 hits, driving in 75 runs and hitting 32 home runs.
Hal Steinbrenner, general manager of the Yankees, told the MLB website that keeping Rizzo will not complicate the negotiations that the team is working on with Aaron Judge.
“[Signing Judge] will not prevent other people from signing. We have to make moves. It’s about who will come. Some will arrive before others and if we feel we need them, we will have to make a decision to improve the team and not just wait for us to resolve with Aaron”, said the GM.
Possible infield in 2023
With the latest development, the infield for New York in 2023 could include Rizzo, Oswald Peraza, Anthony Volpe and Josh Dondaldson. This lineup would be a must if second baseman Gleyber Torres and shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa end up not staying at Yankee Stadium.
