Shohei Ohtani has signed an unprecedented contract in the history of the Major Leagues by accepting $700 million to play the next 10 years with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Japanese player will receive an eye-watering $70 million in 2024 - a figure that eclipses what many MLB organizations are willing to spend on their entire wages bill. A total of eight teams will spend less money paying their squads than what Ohtani will receive in 2024 on his own: the Cleveland Guardians, the Miami Marlins, Kansas City Royals, Milwaukee Brewers, Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates, Baltimore Orioles and Oakland Athletics.

In terms of expenditure, the Guardians are the closest to Ohtani’s salary with a total wage bill of $66.8 million. The player with the highest salary in Cleveland is infielder José Ramírez. The Dominican is expected to pocket $17 million in base salary during the new season.

Then there are the Miami Marlins, who will pay $65.9 million to all the players on their payroll. First baseman Josh Bell is the one who earns the most with an agreed income of $16.5 million. The Kansas City Royals are at $65.4 million due to the 20 million dollars they owe to catcher Salvador Pérez and $8.5 million to pitcher Jordan Lyles. The Brewers exceed $60 million by $1.6 million because they have the second highest-paid left fielder in Christian Yelich ($26 million dollars).

The four teams that will spend the least on salaries by 2024 are the Cincinnati Reds ($59.9 million) , Pittsburgh Pirates ($54.2 million) , Baltimore Orioles ($42.88 million) and Oakland Athletics ($38.6 million). The Reds have two great relievers under contract in Nick Martinez ($14 million dollars) and Emilio Pagán ($8 million). For the Pirates, starter Marco Gonzáles will earn $12.25 million between base salary and signing bonus.

The Orioles are a success story because of the players they still have under salary arbitration. This year the players with the highest base salary in Baltimore are Craig Kimbrel and James McCann with $12 million each.

The Athletics will leave Oakland for Las Vegas in a few years and everyone hopes that will means a fresh injection of cash into the roster. In 2024, the highest paid of the A’s will be Cuban Aledmys Díaz with a salary of $8 million.
