The first full week of 2024 Major League Baseball Spring Training has already given us a lot to think about - we see you Shohei Ohtani. Yet, what we’re really here for is the fact that one of MLB’s most storied ball clubs is taking on another that can be considered the same. It’s the Yankees at the Orioles. Let’s get into it.

Baltimore Orioles to host New York Yankees

Saturday, March 1st will see just two teams taking the field with the New York Yankees heading to Baltimore to take on the Orioles. To be honest, these two teams are going to see a lot of each other this coming season as both can be considered contenders for the American League East title. To that end, it will be interesting to see how they handle getting their first taste of each other in spring training this Saturday in Sarasota, Florida.

Where the Orioles are concerned, they have looked very capable up to this point, winning seven of their first eight games. Of course, it’s worth noting that they are the reigning champions of the division. With that said, the team has seen some changes and is somewhat younger, having taken a top-five pick in the Draft for the last four years consecutively. There is also the reigning Rookie of the Year, Gunnar Henderson, who has shown that he is worth the hype. Consider for a moment that his 66 extra-base hits - ranked 24th in the league - were only bettered on the team by the 70 from Anthony Santander.

As for New York, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. On one side, the team has strengthened but on the other, it will once again come down to whether or not the roster can stay healthy. From Aaron Judge to Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo, some of the Yankees’ biggest stars were forced to watch from the stands for extended periods of time last season after succumbing to injury. To be frank, it was the central reason why the team’s production went from scoring the second most runs in 2022 to the 25th most in 2023. With that in mind, fans will likely be smiling to themselves as only the Dodgers have posted more runs in spring training so far. What’s more is the fact that the aforementioned trio of stars have not featured heavily in that time i.e., the Yankees have greater depth this season which can only be a good thing. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. ET at Ed Smith Stadium. Don’t miss it!
