Team USA eliminates Dominican Republic after controversial final strike in WBC semifinal
A controversy-filled finish defined the World Baseball Classic semifinal. The Dream Team moves on to the championship game and awaits their opponent.

The World Baseball Classic semifinal between Team USA and the Dominican Republic promised drama, and delivered it until the very last out.
Miami hosted a clash between two global baseball powerhouses, rosters stacked with stars and a crowd that reacted to every pitch. But the ending left behind an uneasy silence and a debate that is already becoming part of the tournament’s history.
The United States secured its place in the final after a tense battle with the Dominican Republic. In the end, the score almost became secondary as the game reached its final moment, with runners on and the Dominican lineup hoping for one last miracle at the plate.
The Dominican Republic entered the semifinal undefeated and boasting one of the most feared offenses in the tournament. Names like Juan Soto, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. represented the power of a lineup that had dominated much of the competition.
But the United States responded with composure and timely pitching, led by Paul Skenes. The home team held firm through nine innings defined by strategy and patience. The game unfolded with clutch hits, relievers pitching under pressure, and a stadium atmosphere that felt like a boiling cauldron.
A final moment no one could ignore
In the ninth inning, with the game still within reach, the at-bat fell to Geraldo Perdomo. The count went full.
Then came the decisive pitch.
The umpire ruled it a strike, ending the game, but many watching saw something different. To some, it looked like ball four, a call that would have kept the Dominican rally alive.

The American celebration collided with Dominican disbelief. Players and coaches looked toward home plate in protest, while the stadium echoed with a mix of cheers and murmurs. The semifinal ended on a call that immediately sparked debate. Baseball games are often decided by inches. This time, it may also have come down to interpretation.
With solo home runs in the fourth inning from Roman Anthony and Gunnar Henderson, the United States advanced to the final of the World Baseball Classic. The Dominican Republic was left wondering whether that final pitch might have changed the outcome.
On the field, the scoreboard recorded the result. But off the field, a controversy was born, one that could last far longer than nine innings.
