The anemic Yankees have scored three runs or less in 15 of their last 21 games
The New York Yankees are dead last in the AL East, scoring three or fewer runs in the last three weeks, losing Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton to injury.
As the Tampa Bay Rays continue to build a historic season in the AL East, the reigning divisional champion New York Yankees find themselves increasingly prone to errors, injuries and an anemic offense bears little resemblance to last season’s.
Drowning down in last place and in the throes of a four-game losing streak, the Bronx Bombers have failed to live up to their moniker, producing barely a drip of the runs needed to add to their win column.
The organization’s biggest name, captain Aaron Judge, is currently on the disabled list due to a hip strain suffered while trying to steal third base on April 26, as some sort of cosmically twisted birthday present. On the same day, Judge turned 31 years old.
With Judge currently undergoing rehab, the Yankees have had trouble finding a way to fire up their offense.
New York’s current situation is such a dramatic about-face that since April 10, they have scored three runs or fewer in 15 of their 21 games, the biggest drought in the majors at three more games than any other team during that span.
This also marks the first time in seven years that the Yankees find themselves in last place in the AL East.
During their current four-game losing streak, the Yankees have just scored six times, compared to 25 runs posted by their opponents.
On Monday afternoon, the Cleveland Guardians managed to turn the score around in the eighth inning, exposing the Yankees’ offense through their inability to match them punch-for-punch.
The Yankees only have three comebacks this year, the same amount as the Washington Nationals and Cleveland Rockies, both of which are also scraping the bottom of their respective divisions. The difference of course is that both of those teams maintain payrolls at least $100 million lower than that of the Yankees.
SOME GOOD NEWS
The Yankees added Harrion Bader to their active roster on Tuesday. The outfielder will be able to play in Game 2 against the Cleveland Guardians, where he will hopefully help spark some life into this offense that is terminally incapable of scoring runs.
In addition to Judge, injuries to Giancarlo Stanton and Josh Donaldson have rubbed salt in the wound for manager Aaron Boone.
