Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts suffered a broken left hand after being hit by a hard pitch in the seventh inning during the game against the Kansas City Royals at the Dodger Stadium.

No surgery also no return date set for Mookie

The Dodgers beat the Royals 3-0. Still, the victory cost the Californian team dearly: “I feel very bad for Mookie. He was obviously having an MVP season. It’s very unfortunate. You have to move forward, and that’s what we’re going to do,” said manager Dave Roberts.

The player had to leave the game after receiving the ball directly in his hand at a speed of 98 mph thrown by pitcher Dan Altavilla. “It was a fracture in the left hand. I think it was the metacarpal. It will be time to know it is broken; there will be no surgery. We will just rest and let the bones heal,” Roberts said.

Mookie Betts maintains a batting average of .304/.405/.488 with 10 home runs, 40 runs batted in, and 9 stolen bases in 72 Dodgers games. Venezuelan Miguel Rojas replaced him, and everything indicates that he will appear in the lineup during Betts’ absence.

Betts’ loss is added to the loss of Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who was diagnosed with a rotator cuff strain. It is still uncertain how long he will be away from the game.

Mookie’s broken hand will take approximately 6-8 weeks to heal, depending on the severity and exact location of the break. Losing Betts at the top of the lineup will be a big blow to L.A.’s offense. The team will need to rely on their deep roster and hope for substantial contributions from the other players to make up for the loss.
