While Los Angeles Dodgers executives seek to close signings during MLB free agency, with Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto as the dream targets, manager Dave Roberts is working with the players he has at his disposal. As is the case with Mookie Betts, who will go from being an outfielder to playing second base during the 2024 season, as confirmed by Roberts this week.

New position for the All-Star

II think it’s pretty safe to say that No. 50, Mookie Betts, is going to be our everyday second baseman,” Roberts announced during an interview with MLB Network. With those words, the rumor that Betts could play part-time as an outfielder ends and the manager is going to reconvert the All-Star. “It’s one of those things where he’s a Gold Glover out in right field, but I think that when you’re talking about putting together a roster and someone who can be so offensive at second base, you can get more games out of him if he is playing second base”.

Last season, the 31-year-old played second base when the Dodgers faced right-handed pitching. The advantage of playing this position will help prolong Mookie’s career as he will be putting less of a physical burden on his body.

Last year he played 62 games at second base and 77 in right field. Betts’ versatility is vital for the Los Angeles Dodgers rotation that seeks to win its division for the third consecutive season. Mookie was also used at shortstop with 12 appearances, a new position for him and one in which he was able to perform.
