The New York Mets make first roster cuts heading into next season
Despite the multimillion-dollar investment they made a few months ago, the Mets were unable to secure their ticket to the postseason.

As Major League Baseball heads into the offseason, teams across the league are preparing for the start of free agency, which officially kicks off Thursday, November 6 at 12:00 a.m. EST.
Front offices are already deep in analysis, weighing their best options to build competitive rosters for the upcoming season.

Mets’ investment fails to pay off
Despite a massive spending spree last winter, the New York Mets fell short of expectations and missed out on a postseason berth. Their playoff hopes were dashed in the final game of the regular season, when they lost to the Miami Marlins—a win that would have punched their ticket to October. The Mets finished with an 83–79 record, identical to the Cincinnati Reds, but lost out due to tiebreaker rules.
A total of eight New York Mets players became free agents:
- Griffin Canning
- Ryan Helsley
- Starling Mars
- Cedric Mullins
- Tyler Rogers
- Gregory Soto
- Ryne Stanek
- Jesse Winker
With Pete Alonso and Edwin Díaz becoming free agents, is it more likely the Mets sign both, sign one or sign neither?@sal_licata, @BerbariOnAir, @AnthonyDiComo & @Todd_Zeile discuss on Baseball Night in New York

Now, the franchise faces critical decisions. Eight players are already heading into free agency, and negotiations are underway to retain star closer Edwin Díaz and slugger Pete Alonso. If deals aren’t reached, both could hit the open market as well.
On a brighter note for Mets fans, the team retains long-term control over three cornerstone players: Dominican outfielder Juan Soto, Puerto Rican shortstop Francisco Lindor, and center fielder Brandon Nimmo. Their presence offers stability and hope for the future as the organization looks to rebound.
