Neither Benji Gil’s conviction of dreaming of leading the San Diego Padres to their first World Series championship, nor the numbers delivered in the last World Baseball Classic. Nor the management of Club House. Nor having worked as Shohei Ohtani’s hitting coach. None of this convinced the Friars one hundred percent, who already pray to another saint.

Mike Shildt entered the shortlist, like every good skydiver. With previous experiences as Head Coach from 2018 to 2012 with the St. Louis Cardinals. The Padres confirmed the new Manager on social media today, after Mike Shildt’s name was leaked through a publication in The Athletic this Tuesday morning.

Who is Mike Shildt, new manager of the San Diego Padres?

Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Mike Shildt, 55, never played in Major League Baseball, but he became Manager of the Year in the Major League. He played at college and university level, but indicated his career in the Majors as a scout for the St. Louis Cardinals, a team for which he took the main reins in 2017, and with whom he achieved good numbers - 559 wins, something that the Padres are used to.

With Shildt at the helm, the Cardinals reached three Postseasons, but only once, in 2019, did they reach the National League Championship Series, on the other occasions (2020, 2021 and 2022) they remained in the Wild Card round.

It was in the 2019 season when he was named Manager of the Year in his first full season in the Major League. They closed with a 91-71 record as winner of the National League Central Division pennant. Like the Padres, they have yet to win a World Series.
