The Yankees beat the Orioles despite Aaron Judge’s injury
New York managed to beat Baltimore in the first of the series, but the Orioles pitchers hit Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres very hard.
The New York Yankees (51-24) returned to victory after two losses against the Boston Red Sox by beating the Baltimore Orioles (47-25) and scoring 4-2 at Yankee Stadium. Néstor Cortés had a quality start as he pitched six complete innings, struck out six of the 23 Orioles he faced, and only allowed five hits without runs. In addition, he achieved his fourth victory of the year.
The Yankees opened the scoring in the second inning with an RBI single by Anthony Volpe. The New York shortstop hit a powerful shot to left field for Austin Wells to buzzer. The ‘Bronx Bombers’ shortstop has produced 27 runs in 2024.
Aaron Judge could step on the home plate in the third roll, but it was at the cost of suffering a violent pitch. ‘The Judge’ received a fastball from Albert Suárez that traveled 94.1 miles per hour on the back of his left hand. Then, Giancarlo Stanton sent Judge to the plate with a liner to center field. The 2022 AL MVP left the Yankee Stadium field in the fourth inning and was replaced by Trent Grisham.
Ben Rice's first hit in the Major Leagues
The New York organization elevated prospect Ben Rice to the Major Leagues, and in his first game on the ‘Show,’ he managed to hit a single in the third roll. The infielder found a fastball from the Orioles starter and took first base. With the bases loaded, Gleyber Torres hit a sacrifice fly for Verdugo to score New York’s third on a hit-and-run.
The fifth inning began with another hit by an Orioles pitcher at a Yankees batter. Those involved were Keegan Akin and Gleyber Torres. The Venezuelan scored New York’s fourth when DJ LeMahieu hit a sacrifice fly.

The Orioles respond
Baltimore entered the ninth inning with six hits but no runs to face closer Clay Holmes. However, Gunnar Henderson singled, and then Anthony Santander put the Orioles on the scoreboard with a two-run home run. The ‘O’s’ right fielder sent the ball 384 feet to right field.
However, Holmes controlled Cedric Mullins well and was taken out of circulation at 6-3. Then, he got the second out by striking out at the expense of Jorge Mateo. The game ended with a victory for the Yankees when Colton Cowser hit a grounder directly into LeMahieu’s mitt.
