After three games, the New York Yankees remain undefeated in 2024, beating the Houston Astros 5-3 at Minute Maid Park. Since 2003, the ‘Bronx Bombers’ had not started the season with three wins. The victory went to Marcus Stroman, brand new reinforcement of the ‘Manhattan Mules’, the save went to Clay Holmes and the defeat went to Bryan Abreu.

The Astros started with an advantage

Mauricio Dubón scored the first two runs for the Astros with a double in the second inning. The Honduran player hit Marcus Stroman’s pitch hard and sent it to deep right field, where Juan Soto was unable to field the ball properly. Yainer Díaz and Jeremy Peña were the Houston players who made it to home plate.

The Yankees failed to score on their own merit, but rather due to an error by José Abreu. After singles by Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, Rizzo hit a ground ball that the Astros’ first baseman could not control, allowing the Dominican to safely advance to home plate.

The Astros scored their third run thanks to a mistake by Anthony Volpe. Yordan Álvarez hit a ground ball to the shortstop, who tried to make a double play. However, his throw to first base went past Anthony Rizzo, allowing Victor Caratini to score calmly. Marcus Stroman was unable to make a proper play, and Alvarez advanced to third base.

The Yankees come back based on home runs

In the game, Oswaldo Cabrera had not hit anything in his first three at-bats. However, in the seventh inning, he made a great play by hitting a two-run home run. Bryan Abreu walked Austin Wells, and then Cabrera hit the ball out of right field to tie the game at three runs each.

Juan Soto was also amazing in the match. He hit the first home run with the Yankees jersey, and he did it quickly and efficiently. With two outs and a strike against him, Juan Soto smashed the ball to upper left field, helping the ‘Bronx Bombers’ take the lead on the scoreboard.

Volpe was able to redeem his mistake by hitting a solo home run in the eighth inning. The Yankees shortstop sent the ball to the left side of center field to make the score 5-3 in favor of the visitors.
