This year, among the Latin American players who were nominated are Pablo López (Minnesota Twins), Carlos Rodón (New York Yankees), José Berrios (Toronto Blue Jays), and Francisco Lindor (New York Mets).

In December 1972, Clemente tragically died in a plane crash while trying to deliver emergency relief supplies to the survivors of a massive earthquake in Nicaragua.

Following his untimely death, the National Baseball Hall of Fame changed its rules to allow players who had been deceased for at least six months to be eligible for induction. In 1973, Clemente was posthumously inducted, making him the first player from the Caribbean and Latin America to receive this honor in the Hall of Fame.
