Man charged in beer can throwing incident involving Ted Cruz
According to reports on Monday, the man who threw a beer can at U.S. Senator Ted Cruz during the Houston Astros World Series victory parade has been arrested. As per the Houston Police Department, he was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and released on $40,000 bond. “The beer can struck the Senator in the chest/neck area,” read a tweet from Houston police. “The Senator did not require medical attention.” The man who police arrested, has been identified as 33-year-old Joseph Halm Arcidiacono.
As for the incident itself, the moment occurred during the Astros’ motorcade on Monday. Having defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 to clinch the 2022 World Series title, there was cause to celebrate. During the three-mile parade through downtown Houston, Sen. Cruz could be seen riding on the back of a military vehicle and waving to the crowd. Indeed, a resident of the area and apparent fan of the Astros - he was seen at several games - Cruz’s presence was understandable at the least. Yet, videos on social media appear to show his presence wasn’t exactly welcome as the crowd on hand can be heard and seen to boo him, before finally a beer can flies straight at him.

Following the incident, Sen. Cruz acknowledged the police response, while also taking a not so veiled jab at his would-be attacker. “As always I’m thankful for the Houston Police and Capitol Police for their quick action. I’m also thankful that the clown who threw his White Claw had a noodle for an arm,” Cruz tweeted. Court documents filed by the prosecution state that Arcidiacono “used and exhibited a deadly weapon, namely an unopened metal beverage can.” Indeed.
A fan helped police to detain Joseph Halm Arcidiacono
Though the police response to the incident was swift, it’s worth noting that it was actually a fan who initially detained Arcidiacono. It is understood, that the fan in question claims to have seen Arcidiacono run towards the barrier and then proceed to throw the beer can. At that point he Arcidiacono who was attempting to flee. As per reports, Arcidiacono told the police who took him into custody, “I know, I’m an idiot. I’m sorry.” Arcidiacono is set to appear in court on Wednesday.
