What do we know about the fatal shooting involving Chicago Cubs prospect Josefrailin Alcantara?
Though details are still emerging, what’s clear is that the promising prospect is now linked with a terrible situation that ended in the death of a young man.
Though he’s no longer associated with the Cubs, it’s likely questions will be asked about why a player who is implicated in such a serious situation was associated with the franchise to begin with. Needless to say, there will be more to come in this tragic situation.
Cubs’ Josefrailin Alcantara implicated in fatal shooting
According to multiple reports, Josefrailin Alcantara, a highly rated prospect who was recently released by the Cubs, is now being sought after by police in the Dominican Republic in connection with a fatal shooting. At just 18-years-old, Alcantara is alleged to have shot a 26-year-old male twice while sitting in a vehicle in Santiago, Dominican Republic, after a dispute over money.
Incidentally, it’s also understood that Alcantara received medical attention himself before fleeing the scene. As per reports, the car in which the incident occurred is now in the possession of local authorities. In addition, reports have also indicated that Alcantara’s 18-year-old cousin, who was allegedly in the back of the car when the shooting occurred, was also arrested on May 24th in connection with the incident.
Where do the Chicago Cubs stand on Josefrailin Alcantara?
Given the severe nature of the situation, it wasn’t long before the Cubs released a statement about it. “We were made aware of a death investigation involving one of our recently released minor-league players,” the Cubs said in a statement. “We cannot provide further comment until we have additional details.” As stated before, Alcantara has been released by the Cubs so at this point he is in no way connected to MLB. Prior to this sad situation, he had been signed for $500,000 as an international free agent back in January of 2022. Across 40 games in the Dominican Summer League last year, he hit .136/.282/.254.
