What is the MLB record for most losses in a season?
After suffering yet another defeat on Saturday, the Chicago White Sox are on the verge of an unwanted record.
The Chicago White Sox are on the cusp of breaking the ‘modern era’ record for the most defeats in a single Major League Baseball regular season, after suffering their 119th loss of the campaign this weekend.
What’s the current MLB defeats record?
Having gone down 6-2 to the San Diego Padres on Saturday, the White Sox now have a 36-119 record in 2024 - a tally that leaves Chicago just one defeat shy of the New York Mets’ post-1900 high of 120 losses, set in 1962.
What’s more, the White Sox have equalled the American League’s single-season record for defeats, established by the Detroit Tigers in 2003.
When can White Sox break MLB, AL records?
Chicago will claim the unwanted AL record outright if they are beaten again by the San Diego Padres today. If that happens, they will then overtake the Mets’ historic MLB-wide total if they lose to the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday.
With seven games still to play in the regular season, the White Sox have ample time to break both records even if they do not do so in the coming three days.
However, Grady Sizemore’s men cannot overtake the all-time MLB mark for losses in a single regular season. That record belongs to the Cleveland Spiders, who were defeated 134 times in 1899.
