What MLB games could Hurricane Helene affect?
It poured down on Atlanta on Wednesday, so much so that Major League Baseball announced that 2 pivotal games are being postponed due to the wet conditions.
The New York Mets-Atlanta Braves games scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday at Truist Park have been postponed due to anticipated inclement weather. The Florida panhandle is expected to experience the effects of Hurricane Helene, which could also impact Truist Park in Atlanta. The MLB season, initially set to conclude on Sunday, will now be extended into next week to accommodate the rescheduled games, which will be played as a doubleheader on Monday at Truist Park.
The Braves face a scheduling challenge with critical matchups against two wild-card contenders, including the Mets and the Royals. The National Weather Service has called the weather combination in North Georgia “unprecedented.”
What’s the position for the Braves in their playoff chase?
The series between the Mets and the Braves was considered crucial for determining playoff spots in the 2024 MLB season. Currently, the Mets hold a one-game lead over the Braves for a wild-card spot, and the Braves are half a game behind the Arizona Diamondbacks for the third and final wild-card spot.
The Mets will now travel to Milwaukee to face the Brewers, who have already secured the NL Central title. They can expect an uninterested opponent who is already preparing for the postseason. The Mets will likely benefit from playing in an indoor stadium with no risk of postponement in Milwaukee.
As for the Braves, the Braves will host the Kansas City Royals and wait for the Mets’ return trip to Atlanta for Monday’s game(s), hoping that the hurricane will not be that violent and cut possible transport lines.
