The Major League playoffs in the 2023 campaign are getting closer with the imminent end of the regular season. Today, the Milwaukee Brewers (88-66) became the fifth MLB team to ensure their participation in the postseason.

The Brewers defeated the Miami Marlins 16-1 (79-75) and thus made their fifth appearance in the playoffs in the last six years. The Milwaukee team has first place in the National League Central division, but the Chicago Cubs (80-74) are still close.

So far, only the Atlanta Braves (99-55), Los Angeles Dodgers (94-58), and the Brewers have clinched their postseason berth in the Old Circuit. In the Young Circuit, the Baltimore Orioles (95-59) and the Tampa Bay Rays (94-61) have already secured their place but are still fighting to define the AL East crown, while the Minnesota Twins were crowned champions—the AL Central.

Mathematically, the race for wild card spots in the National League is open to eight teams. Those who have the advantage today to play in the wild-card round are the Philadelphia Phillies (85-69), Arizona Diamondbacks (81-73) and Chicago Cubs (80-74). The teams that still aspire to a miracle to sneak into the playoffs are the Miami Marlins, Cincinnati Reds (79-76), San Francisco Giants (76-77), San Diego Padres (75-78) and Pittsburgh Pirates (73-81).

The Seattle Mariners (84-69) and New York Yankees (78-76) still keep their hopes alive of dethroning the Toronto Blue Jays (86-68), Houston Astros (85-69) and Texas Rangers (85-68 ), who, if the season ended today, would advance to the wild card round.

Teams eliminated from playoff contention in 2023

The teams eliminated during the race for the American League playoff spots are the Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Guardians, Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Angels, Chicago White Sox, Kansas City Royals, and Oakland Athletics. Only four NL teams are eliminated: the New York Mets, Washington Nationals, St. Louis Cardinals, and Colorado Rockies.
