When is the 2025 MLB trade deadline? Teams, players, rumors

So, what’s the deal with the Trade Deadline? It’s the last moment when teams can trade players on 40-man rosters. After 6 p.m. ET on July 31, trades are off the table, though players can still be placed on outright waivers. Before 2019, the deadline was a bit of a two-parter with the non-waiver deadline on July 31 and an August waiver trade period. But that’s ancient history now; we’ve got a single deadline for all the marbles.

Minor leaguers not on 40-man rosters? They can still be swapped after the deadline, but any player needs to be in an organization by the end of August to be postseason-eligible.

Top storylines and rumors from around MLB

Arizona Diamondbacks:

The D-backs will be looking to make some moves over the next few days and two candidates are pitchers Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen. Fans would not be happy to see them go or big hitter Eugenio Suarez, but we’ll have to see if another team is willing to fork out the money for Suarez’s bat.

Chicago White Sox & Oakland A’s:

The White Sox are definitely sellers once again this season, despite their hot start after the All-Star break.

The A’s are once again at the bottom of the American West table and will be looking to make some moves for the future as well.

Bubble Teams:

Teams like the Braves, Nationals and Marlines are also off to slow starts and could be looking to to the future as the 2025 season is going to be an uphill battle through September. The Nationals, Pirates and Rockies are in a similar situation.

Starting Pitcher Surprise?

The Marlins have two candidates who could be traded before the July 31 deadline. Sandy Alcantara has been struggling after Tommy John surgery and the Marlins would surely be willing to trade him for a young prospect.

Edward Cabrera, 27, is another Marlins pitcher that other teams have shown interest in, but we’ll have to wait and see if Miami is willing to make a move with the young pitcher.
