Who are the 30 nominees for the Roberto Clemente Award?
The Roberto Clemente Award is given to the player who best represents baseball through his community involvement, character and philanthropy.
Each year, MLB recognizes the players who best represent baseball through their community involvement, character, and philanthropy and awards them the Roberto Clemente Award. The award is named after the former Puerto Rican outfielder who died in a plane crash in 1972 while carrying a shipment of humanitarian aid to Managua, Nicaragua.
Major League Baseball has revealed a list of 30 nominated baseball players, one per franchise, and fans are tasked with voting to grant them this recognition.
This year, among the Latin American players who were nominated are Venezuelans Salvador Pérez (Kansas City Royals), Pablo López (Minnesota Twins) and Jesús Luzardo (Miami Marlins); Dominicans: Manny Machado (San Diego Padres) and Freddy Peralta (Milwaukee Brewers); and Puerto Ricans Francisco Lindor (New York Mets) and Marcus Stroman (New York Yankees).
The latest three winners of the award are Aaron Judge in 2023, Justin Turner in 2022, and Nelson Cruz in 2021.
These are the 30 candidates for the Roberto Clemente Award 2024:
Roberto Enrique Clemente Walker (August 18, 1934 – December 31, 1972) was a Puerto Rican professional baseball player. He played 18 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Pittsburgh Pirates, mainly as a right fielder.
In December 1972, Clemente tragically died in a plane crash while trying to deliver emergency relief supplies to the survivors of a massive earthquake in Nicaragua.
Following his untimely death, the National Baseball Hall of Fame changed its rules to allow players who had been deceased for at least six months to be eligible for induction. In 1973, Clemente was posthumously inducted, making him the first player from the Caribbean and Latin America to receive this honor in the Hall of Fame.
